The USDA divides North America into 13 zones, each representing a 10°F range of average annual extreme minimum winter temperature — the coldest night you can typically expect, averaged over three decades, not the coldest night that’s ever happened. Zone 1 is the coldest (-60°F or below), Zone 13 the warmest (60°F and up). Each zone also splits into “a” and “b” half-zones, a tighter 5°F band — the difference between 7a and 7b, for example, is just five degrees.
The most current map, released in 2023, is also the most accurate one ever produced — built from 13,412 weather stations (nearly double the 7,983 used in the previous 2012 map) using 1991–2020 climate data. That update shifted roughly half the country into a warmer half-zone compared to the older map, reflecting real warming in average winter lows over that period.
